The ALDABA WIB Chair: Women, ICT & Business organizes meetings between students from different years of the Computer Engineering degree program at the University of A Coruña and the University of Vigo, with the aim of sharing “motivations and difficulties they encountered when choosing a technology-related career.” These sessions are part of the project “Study of Indicators to Reduce the Gender Gap in Computer Engineering Degrees within the Galician University System,” and the first session took place at the Faculty of Computer Science on the Elviña Campus of the University of A Coruña on February 23.
“Traditionally, studies on the gender gap have focused on analyzing the reasons why women don’t choose certain technology careers, but we consider it equally important to know what motivates the small percentage of women who do,” explains Virginia Mato Abad, director of the Chair at the University of A Coruña. In this way, she adds, “this information allows us to develop initiatives that help other girls do the same.”
Xeitura, the company responsible for energizing the meetings among the students and facilitating the relationship between first-year and final-year students, will soon prepare the reports with the results obtained from the meetings held both at the UDC’s Faculty of Computer Science and at the UVigo’s Higher School of Computer Engineering, scheduled for March 8.
