The Ramón Menéndez Pidal, an institute in Zalaeta, commemorates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and Technology with a series of talks for students. The series features leading professionals, especially from the university and research sectors, including the director of the ALDABA WIB Chair, Virginia Mato Abad, who on Tuesday, February 14, will give a talk on computer engineering, thereby helping to highlight women’s contributions to the ICT field, create role models, and spark girls’ and young women’s interest in technology careers.
It is organized by the ZalaTecno Science and Technology Club. According to one of the teachers, Paz Freire, the series aims to help students learn about the role of women in these fields and foster vocations in science and technology.
Some of the talks given were by Professor María Concepción Herrero, titled “Microbes: Enemies or Friends?”; “The Air We Breathe” by Purificación López, Professor of Analytical Chemistry; and “Yeasts: Tiny Organisms of Enormous Importance,” presented by researchers Sara Expósito and Olalla Liz. In the field of computer science, Beatriz Pérez gave the talk “Women, Engineering, and Computer Science,” and Lucía Ramos spoke about “Artificial Vision.” Applications from the medical field to industrial environments’, Virginia Mato Abad on the computer engineering degree, and Bertha Guijarro Berdiñas on the talk titled ‘Artificial Intelligence? "Naturally!" In March, Verónica Bolón will give the lecture ‘Artificial Intelligence: A Gender Issue’.
